Emily Sonnett- USA Soccer Team
Emily Sonnett is a former NWSL first overall draft pick selected by the Portland Thorns. She is a multiskilled player, playing the position of defender. This will be Sonnett’s very first USA Women’s World Cup appearance. Emily previously played for the University of Virginia. Her first career goal came against Boston College, which happened to be the game winner. During her freshman year of college, she was ACC All-Freshman and Tournament team. As Sonnett’s college career continued to show her dominance and how good of a player she is until she declared for the draft.
During her stint with the Portland Thorns, Emily has experienced team-highs when winning their second NWSL championship. She has also experienced some lows by not earning consistent call-ups after SheBelieves Cup, while also making some defensive errors in the 2017 season. Because of this, Emily worked on herself physically, mentally and key aspects of her game in order to reach her potential further. Her game continued to develop as she played overseas in Australia’s W-League side Sydney FC. Emily will be looking to make a positive impact on the field for the USA Women’s World Cup team.
